The Residents - Animal Lover (2005)

This is perhaps the best place for a Rez novice to start - it may still be terrifying and bizarrely dark, but it is relatively "accessible" - very emotional songs ("My Window," "What Have My Chickens Done Now?," "Elmer's Song" etc.). It was my first Residents album and for several listens through I was petrified, but too fascinated to stop. Welcome to another place!

3 albums by the Residents: Duck Stab / Buster & Glen (1978); Commercial Album (1980); God In Three Persons (1988)

This is an update of an older post, links replaced by links to 320 rips, all mediafire. Animal Lover was up here before, I will get it up soon, as well as some other Res albums in the future. Please enjoy:

"Over the course of a recording career spanning several decades, The Residents have remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of wilful obscurity, the band's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise -- usually tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks -- and refusing to grant media interviews."

Some good Residents albums, @320:

Duck Stab/Buster & Glen (1978)

Two EPs, though generally considered an album or something. Real good. I recently discovered Primus included a medley cover of the tracks "Constantinople" and "Hello Skinny" as a bonus on some issues of their debut Frizzle Fry. Neat oh.

God In Three Persons (1988)

A concept album of sorts, although the music plays a background to "Mr. X's" narrative about his meeting of two androgynous siamese twins who have miraculous healing powers.

This ranks highly in my favorite albums, it's one of the Residents' best projects.

Sun City Girls - Dante's Disneyland Inferno (1996)

One of two massive double albums released by SCG in 1996. Hard to really describe this one, it's a melting pot by normal standards, but they make it sound like an album should. When I started listening to this album, I really started to grasp just how good Sun City Girls are, and how much of a shame it is that pretty much everyone ignores their work.

Ahmad Jamal - Jamal Plays Jamal (1974)

I really like this album. It's piano-driven jazz, but not without its share of bass and drum bits too. And strings! Very nice strings here and there. It's far from being considered a jazz classic or anything like that, although Jamal is well know enough, I just like it. I listened to this album on repeat while reading Ryu Murakami's book Almost Transparent Blue. Doing that created some strong attachment to this album for me, so that's probably why it's here. You might recognize part of the second song," Pastures" from somewhere. It looped for a pretty hook on "Feelin' It" off Unreasonable Doubt. Anyway, enjoy, this is good stuff, especially if you're looking to relax.
