The Fugs - First Album (1965)

The first ten tracks of this one, I believe, were the original Fugs album, the next 11 are bonus tracks added on a 1993 reissue. Hard to say much about this record...it's weird and excellent and funny, but you can still take it seriously (sometimes). I think the songwriting is fucking superb, but the performance is so unusual. I think if the term had existed, they would have been pegged "outsider." Whatever the fuck that means.

Sun City Girls - Dante's Disneyland Inferno (1996)

One of two massive double albums released by SCG in 1996. Hard to really describe this one, it's a melting pot by normal standards, but they make it sound like an album should. When I started listening to this album, I really started to grasp just how good Sun City Girls are, and how much of a shame it is that pretty much everyone ignores their work.

From the incredibly vague details that are on the web about this group, I've only been able to gather that it is a Japanese collective that has been around since the early 1970s, made up of hundreds of people that primarily do other things than music to make a living. Some music is really fucking timeless and spaceless, and this is it. It would make as much sense in the most obscure nonexistant places.

The Mountain Goats - First two cassettes

Taboo VI: The Homecoming

The Mountain Goats' first cassette. It's not exactly the highest quality recordings, even by the lo-fi standards of early Mountain Goats, but you take what you can get with stuff like this. It's good. Especially the "This Magic Moment" cover, "Going To Alaska," and "Ice Cream, Cobra Man." But none of it sounds too much like the rest of Darnielle's recordings. Download.

The Hound Chronicles

The Mountain Goats' second cassette. (I think.) Higher quality recordings than the tape above, better songs, and almost double the length. It feels like it was the first real Mountain Goats album, and Darnielle has even said that he never meant "Taboo VI" to be heard by anyone other than some friends and family...so there you have it. Captain #1-The Humble / Captain#1/Enoch-Color What You Want

Athens-based Captain #1's sound is the product of Tim Denson, formerly of Starlite Motel. The Humble's tracks sparkle with not only twinkling acoustic guitars in open tunings, but glockenspiels, tambourines, maracas, and sometimes what sounds like a well-handled kazoo. Perfect low-key, mellow, indie pop.

Captain #1/Enoch-Color What You Want (2005)

2006's Color What You Want is a split-EP from Captain #1 and Fort Myers, Florida's Enoch Bledsoe. Enoch's sound is very folky and sometimes aggressive, providing an interesting contrast but a beautiful accompaniment to Captain #1.
Tracks #1-5 belong to Tim Denson and Captain #1; tracks #7-11 are Enoch Bledsoe's. Track #6 is an instrumental featuring a harmonica, performed by both artists.

O'Death - Head Home

Taylor (the other person who posts on here) and I went to see Murder By Death in May (I think?) of this year, and this band opened. After the show I bought this. It's technically their second LP, but it's the first one available. I've been told to classify them as "junkyard orchestra," which is logical, I guess. Also heard they're similar sounding to Man Man, but I've never listened to Man Man, so...up to you to figure that out. I would definitely definitely push you to go see them live if at all possible.
